What is Vivitrol?
A Proven and Safe Maintenance Medication
Vivitrol is one of the most common medications currently used to combat opioid and alcohol addiction in the US today. It has the most proven track record of all medications and is arguably the most manageable as well. It was first approved by the FDA for the treatment of alcoholism and for relapse prevention from opioids in 2010. The drug is administered once a month through an intramuscular injection and remains effective for as many as 30 days. This can be done while being treated during and inpatient or outpatient stay.

- Non-narcotic and non-habit forming
- Covered by insurance benefits
How Does Vivitrol Work?
Reducing Cravings and Symptoms
Vivitrol operates as an opioid antagonist, binding to the brain’s opioid receptors and preventing the stimulation of the reward system from responding to opioids. This results in the patient being unable to feel the desired effects of the drug. Vivitrol has also shown to react with the body’s natural endorphin reaction to alcohol, reducing cravings for alcohol as well. It has only been shown to be effective in treating alcohol and opioid dependences with no evidence showing that it may help with addictions to other drugs.
